Booms

The use of oil booms is a very simple and popular method of controlling oil spills. Equipment called containment booms acts like a fence to prevent the oil from further spreading or floating away. Booms float on the water surface and have three parts 
 A ‘free board’ is the part that rises above the water surface, containing the oil and preventing it from splashing over the top
• A ‘skirt’ is placed below the surface and keeps the oil from being squeezed under the booms and escaping
• A kind of cable or chain that connects the parts to strengthen and stabilize the boom
Connected sections of the boom are placed around the area of the oil spill until it is totally surrounded and contained
This method is Effective only when the oil is in one spot
It works when the spill is accessible within a few hours of taking place, otherwise, the area of the spill becomes too large to manage
It cannot be successfully employed under rough sea waves, high wind velocities or fluctuating tides




Skimmers

Skimmers are machines specially designed to suck up the oil from the water surface like a vacuum cleaner

Skimmers can be used to effectively recover most of the spilt oil, so it is economically viable

The presence of debris poses a major roadblock to this technique, as skimmers can get clogged easily



Using Dispersants



  • The toxicity of dispersants can affect marine organisms, especially the non-mobile ones such as corals and sea grass

Predicting Slick Impact طريقة حساب حركة بقعة الزيت

An oil slick will not usually stay in the same position but will drift under the influence of external factor. (winds, waves, tides and currents).
The slick will rapidly become elongated and will form windrows.
Typically it will move at between 2% and 5% of the speed of the wind measured 10 m above the water surface.In open water, 3% of the wind speed is normally used to estimate drift rate.
—Current regime may be constant but more commonly vary in strength and direction over time. 
—The strength and direction of tidal streams will influence the movement of the slick in the short term ,But As a rule, oil will move on water with 3% of the wind’s energy
and 100% of the current. A resultant trajectory can therefore be calculated for the expected impact of the oil spill.

بقعة الزيت لا تمكث فى الغالب فى نفس موقعها وانما تتحرك ويتحم فى ذلك كل من(الرياح والتيار والامواج)  وتتحرك تقريبا مابين 2%الى5% من اتجاه سرعة الرياح ويتحكم بها اتجاه التيار كليا

To calculate impact location:

1.  Plot the last known location of slick on a marine chart.
2.  Calculate and plot 3% of wind speed and direction (as predicted 
from meteorological forecasts)
3.  Calculate and plot 100% of current speed and direction (as 
determined from marine charts and local information)
4.  The resultant vector will determine the predicted slick position for 
the given period of time. 
This can also be ascertained using oil spill modelling software, if
available.
